Research Scientist, International Research Institute for Climate and Society (IRI)
Giannini holds a Ph.D. in Earth and Environmental Sciences from the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory at Columbia University. Her work focuses on drought, desertification and climate/environmental change in the semi-arid tropics. Giannini demonstrated the relationship between late 20th century persistence of drought in the African Sahel and long-term change in the oceans around Africa, and is interested in the attribution question – to what extent can recent shifts in precipitation in Africa, e.g. drought in the Sahel or in the Horn, be ascribed to emissions from industrialization? – as well as in making sense of regional climate change projections to shape sustainable development.
