Registration

Below are the guidelines for Course Registration for Academic Year 2023-2024.

FULL RESIDENCE UNIT (RU)

You can take a maximum of 20 credits/semester without getting charged extra tuition.

You can register for unlimited classes until the end of the add period, at which point full-time students must be at or under 20 credits.

HALF RESIDENCE UNIT (RU)

A student who is registered for a half Residence Unit (“0.5 RU”) may enroll in up to three courses.

The Columbia equivalent of auditing a course is taking a course for R credit.

C+S students can take courses for R credit if those courses are in addition to the program-required 34 graduate-level credits. In other words, courses taken for R credit do not count towards degree requirements. R credit courses do, however, count towards your total credit count for the semester.

R credit vs Pass/Fail

Students who take a course for P/F are still assessed and expected to complete all graded assignments. Students who take a course for R credit are not required to take the final assessment, but must meet other course requirements unless exceptions are made by the instructor in writing.

Electing R credit

Students who want to take a course for R credit must 1) consult with their academic advisor on how the course will impact their academic program requirements/credit numbers 2) obtain written approval from the instructor of the course. The R credit will be applied at the end of the semester, when instructors are submitting grades.

Note

If a student takes a course for R credit, they may not take the same course again for a letter grade. If a student receives an Incomplete for the R credit course, the instructor may change the grade to Incomplete or Dropped; this will remain on the transcript.

For more detailed information, visit the Registrar's Grade Options page.
